Requirements for tennis courts
When creating a tennis court for training international-level athletes, it is necessary to take into account the requirements of the ITF. According to international standards, the court size should be 23.77 meters in length, 8.23 meters in width in the case of singles and 10.97 in the case of doubles. The width of the back runs for matches must be at least 6.4 meters, for training - 5 meters. The runs on the sides of the court must be at least 3.6 meters wide to ensure comfortable movement of service and medical personnel. These are the basic parameters for preparing the court area on which the covering will be laid in the future.
Main types and features of tennis court coatings
- Grass lawn. They provide the lowest and fastest rebound of the ball and are suitable for playing in the Serve and Volley style (a serve after which the player quickly goes to the net). The disadvantages of such a court include variable characteristics due to the condition of the grass and difficulty of play due to additional uneven ground. By the way, the Wimbledon tournament is held on the lawn court.
- Clay court. It is created from a mixture of clay, sand, brick and stone chips with polymers (most often rubber and plastic chips). Clay courts have the slowest but highest bounce of the ball and are best suited for playing with long rallies and gliding techniques at the moment of impact. The French Open is usually played on clay courts.
- Hard surface. It is a fast type of court with a reduced rebound speed compared to grass, made of concrete or asphalt with a synthetic surface. The Australian and US Opens are played on hard surfaces.
- Carpet covering. A hard type of court with variable ball bounce (depending on the thickness and structure of the surface) and an average pace of play. Most often used in indoor stadiums.
- Basic equipment of tennis courts and features of its operation
- Net. Completely covers the space between the posts and has a cell size smaller than the diameter of the ball. The width of the top strip of the net should be up to 6.35 cm, the width of the central belt should be 5 cm. The height of the net in the center should be 91.4 cm.
- Racks and posts for the grid. The cross-section of the racks should not exceed 7.5 cm in diameter or 7.5 centimeters square. The cross-section of the posts for attaching the mesh should not exceed 15 cm in diameter.
- Referee tower. The height of the seat should be 1.8-2 meters from the surface of the court.
- Fencing and stands. Required for tournament sites.
